Something Different....

Here I have two pieces that aren't original in a couple different ways. First is a fanart of Sean "Cheeks" Galloway's Taki, Kuta, and Kito from Bastion's 7. I approached this one a little differently than usual. Made up a silly little brush and went to town. You should hit up Sean in the Links section to the right.
Secondly I have some line art from the uber-talented Derek Fridolfs ( He let me throw some colors on it and I took a slightly different approach with this one too. I used thick, high opacity brushes and just laid it on heavy. His joker is awesome, eh?

A Bunch of Random Freelance Stuff

Here are a bunch of works from freelance stuff that I have been given permission to release. Can't say what any of them are for yet, though!

Happy Holidays!

Pop-Gun Depot

Another random doodle that took over.

I planned on getting this up Monday but with my internet going out and the image becoming a little more ambitious than I previously intended it took a bit longer.

This isn't really an IP I thought through. Just a fun name to go with a wacky concept. I hope this makes ya smile!

The Enlightenment of Thurgood

"Just when he didn't expect it...satori..."

The fisherman who reached enlightenment on the seas.

This was a doodle that turned into a full illustration while I was thinking about my next tatoo.

I'm really happy with the way this one came out. Hope you like it!

Happy Holidays Gang!

Some Monsters!!!

This is the preliminary for a tattoo design for a friend of mine. I have plans to develop this thing into submission and make it better suited for a tattoo. Until then... it makes a rather fun little image. I had a pretty successful weekend (the weekend I did this) in the land of pencil and paper so I plan on putting some colors this one to round out the week. This one is third in line.

Shockwave Alberto and Taiso

Some Giant Robo fan art! We have Taiso and Alberto here. Just to speed things up I will post some other art today in a new entry.

Enjoy GR Fans!

A Nickel's Worth of Dreams

In my seemingly futile attempts to slowly bring this blog up to speed with my DA page I have finally come to posting this pic. Here is the description from DA. I hope to get more up tonight or tomorrow!

This image took so long to finish. I was either out of town, had house guests or just too damn tired to get to it. I hope it was worth the wait.

So here it is... a new story concept called "A Nickel's Worth of Dreams". It involves all the good stuff...

The occult, natural disaster, A street kid hard on her luck, a delusional youth who learns he needs to grow up, a mysterious villain, and an over-worked accountant for an orange juice company who has a problem involving everything previously mentioned... and a fiery horn growing out of his head... can't forget that.

I hope you enjoying viewing!

Calvin and the Hobbes!

I used to say "I don't do much fan art" but in the last year or so that has considerably changed. To follow up the Uncharted: Drake's Fortune fan art I have some Calvin and Hobbes stuff! I also included a "detail" shot so everyone can enjoy their expressions.

I got into C&H way later that most people. I now own the complete collected edition and I absolutely love it. I would go into why I love it... but they would be the same reasons everyone else does.

I hope everyone likes this!

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

I have gone way too long without updating this here blog. So, I plan to bring it up to speed with my DA page.

The first step in doing that is posting this fan pic I did for the about to be released PS3 game entitled Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. I am super jazzed about it... so much so I got off my lazy butt and drew something. This game is going to kick all kinds of ass on top of having a great adventure atmosphere. I love that they are pulling from pulp adventures for their inspiration.

Hope you enjoy Nate's harrowing leap!

More updates to come quickly.

It Has a Name... Island Chronicles!

It has a name!

Here is a fun little splash page I did for the newly named "Island Chronicles". This thing took way longer to do than I planned on. I hope everyone gets a kick outta seeing some of the characters finally together.

The Faces of Watermelons!

I have been working pretty hard to get a bunch of character vignettes done for my resurrected "Watermelons" (title tentative). Here are a bunch of them so far.

Thanks everyone!

Wimps Need Not Apply!

Hey gang!

Been a while since a new post. To be honest, I have been so thoroughly entrenched in work that I have had little time for spare art. However, I have been working on designing a set of vinyl toys my buddy Will and I want to see about getting made and I completed colors on another piece by Sean Galloway (who you can see in my links section).

The pic is called Wimps Need Not Apply and was penciled by Sean Galloway and colored by me, Mike Henry.

Hope ya'll dig!

More updates as soon as I can muster them!

Tribute to Mike Wieringo

I immediately wanted to do a tribute to Mike Wieringo when I heard what happened. He was one of the most influential artists ever for me. I had his comics on my walls, I agonized over the little details in his work, and after meeting him, I decided that is the kind of "pro" I wanted to be.

So here is my tribute. While working on it I thought many times, "I don't have a great reference for this... I'll just email Mike." It's still a desperate feeling to think about the fact that we will never see new work from him.

To Mike, an inspiration!

The passing of Mike Wieringo

I'm sure most of you have heard about the passing of one of comics greatest talents, Mike Wieringo. You can read the story here:

I spent most of my formative-art-years reading Mike's books. He drew my favorite spider-man of all time and I gleaned so much knowledge from watching him work. I had the pleasure of meeting Mike in O'Hare Airport when I was 15. I, many years later, sent him a PM on discussing the meeting that, for me, was an aspiring artist's dream.

My PM to Mike:
My buddy and I met you about 10 years ago... My friend moved away to North Carolina the previous year and came back to Chicago for the Chicago Comicon. After the con we took him to the airport and went to the gate with him (back when you could do that sort of thing). When we were there waiting we saw you flipping through an early copy of the next Wizards mag.

Like the fanboys we were (and still are) we approached you to see if we could glean any kind of tidbits of drawing expertise off of you. We didn't have the time to talk so much about art but what we DID experience was your incredible generosity.

You didn't give us custom drawings or offer to teach us all we wanted to know about drawing. You were just... nice! Lots of people when they are approached by fans become stand-offish and off-put (and other hyphenated words with "off" in them). You just talked to us like friends. You showed us your early copy of Wizard and chatted about general things in North Carolina.

Long story not quite as long, you were a real great guy to meet. I loved your art and you were cool to boot. Moments like that is what kept me working to become a good artist. Now I live in San Francisco and I am a concept artist on a new MMORPG.

Anyhoo, thanks for letting me waste your time.

Mike Henry!

Mike's response:

I remember that.

Thanks very much for the kind words. Believe me-- no matter WHERE I am, if someone appreciates and enoys my work enough to approach me and let me know, it's thoroughly gratifying and not something I would ever take for granted. I feel so fortunate to have even broken INTO this business.... much less still be working steadily in it some 14-15 years later... so thank YOU for being such cool people.

It's one of the things I love about comic books....

This is a long ass journal, but to those who never really new a thing about him I wanted to illustrate how kind he was.

That is really all I can offer on the subject. He will be universally missed.

We Three Kings Finished!

I do not have much to say in this entry. I finished "We Three Kings" and will hopefully get some entries for the Hitote Project. That about sums up my last couple of days.

Hope you dig the new pic!

We Three Kings

The lines for a pic I finally got down on paper. Colors to follow, hopefully tomorrow night!

These three are bounty hunters (actually just hired guns in general). They call themselves the Trigger Kings. No one likes their name but them and they have a long story to justify the name. It usually does them no good to explain. 8)

In other news, I have finally started to kick-off my little side-thing called The Hitote Project. You can see what it is all about here:

Thanks as always for tuning in!

Fisherman, FINISHED

I fell into love and outta love fast with this pic. Luckily, after messing with it some more I slowly transformed it back into something I dig.

The Red Monika pic is still being worked on but I may finally post some brand new stuff tomorrow or the next day.

Some Quick, Not-So-Important Updates

Well, the folks are in for the next week so I don't know how much productivity you will see from me. That is why I have little to show right now. Hopefully that will change.

Here is a small update to my Fisherman pic. I am slowly adding more elements and I find myself liking the original white BG the most. Hmmm... Dilemma.

Also, since I have been on such a huge coloring kick (and work has me drawing all day) I decided to do something I never thought I would do. I'm coloring some Joe Madureira line art. Not for him or a project. Just for more coloring fun. I never thought I would become even mildly good at colors so this is something that just seemed distant for me.

Both are still works in progress. Expect all new stuff from me after the P's leave.

Small Fisherman Update

Here is a small update to the Fisherman. A minimalist BG that I plan to used for each character in the set. Going with a simple "animated" look for these. I have a couple more things to add to this one but I am beat. Time to crash!

The Fisherman

This is a revamp of an older character of mine. Since I have finally crafted my life into something I can try to pass off a career, I find myself wanting to go back an re-do all of my older things. Like doing fan-art for myself. But, after this slew, I will try to refrain from what is more or less recycling.

This is a work in progress and you will see some improvements over the next few days. Kudos to those who can find my original pic of him on my website:

I haven't updated in a long, long time. For more regular updates, check out my DA account: DA gallery:

Cheeks' Warm-ups Colored

Hey there slowly-growing audience. Here are some sketches that the great Sean Galloway did for warm-ups. I put some colors to them and thought I would share. You can check out his work in the Link Machine section. Amazing stuff!

I have been on a huge coloring kick lately, but all my drawing at work has left little time to draw outside of work. Hopefully I can get something out the door in the next couple of days.

Thanks for looking!

I Have Finally Given In...

I got a blog. After a very long time on many other art related sites I finally gave in to everyone who has ever scolded me about not having a Blog. Well, here it is, you scumbags!

And to kick things off, I will post some random stuff form the last couple of months!

Thanks to all who stop by!
